Tienchi ginseng is a popular, treasured herb cultivated in the Yunnan and Guangxi provinces in China. It is a perennial herb belonging to the Araliaceae family.
Tienchi ginseng has several different names, including Panax notoginseng, sanchi ginseng, or san qi ginseng.
History of Tienchi Ginseng
One of the earliest known references to the tienchi ginseng appeared in 1596 in the Compendium of Materia Medica, an encyclopedic herbology guide written by a pharmacologist from the Ming Dynasty. The guide identifies the tienchi ginseng as one of five “real” ginseng plants with important medicinal properties. Every portion of this plant (root, flower, fruit, and leaves) is still an important component in traditional Chinese medicine.
The scientific classification of tienchi is Panax Notoginseng. Russian botanist Carl A. Meyer coined the name Panax from the Greek word meaning “all-healing.”
Tienchi ginseng earned this distinction because of its unique chemical makeup and wide-ranging health benefits. Many Chinese medicine practitioners considered it a miracle cure. Because of this, it was prized above other forms of ginseng and reserved for the Imperial family’s exclusive use.
What are the Benefits of Tienchi Ginseng*?
Chinese doctors have long used Tienchi as the primary herb for supporting heart health and blood circulation. Traditional Chinese medicine also recognizes Tienchi ginseng's affinity for balancing the liver, stomach, and large intestine meridians.
In recent years, further clinical research has identified various components of tienchi that provide health benefits. These include the highest levels of flavonoids, polysaccharides, sterols, adaptogens, and ginsenosides when compared to other panax ginseng variants.
- Flavonoids have powerful antioxidant properties with anti-inflammatory and antiviral benefits that promote good blood circulation and oxygenation.
- Polysaccharides provide energy, blood sugar, and immune support.
- Sterols are vital to cellular function, hormone production, and oxygenation.
- Adaptogens support hormonal responses related to stress and anxiety. They can help stabilize mood, reduce stress responses, and preserve energy reserves.
- Ginsenosides can affect health over a broad range of functions and body systems, including metabolism, blood production, hormones, liver function, heart health, and so much more. Saponin A is recognized as a key ginsenoside that is unique to tienchi ginseng. It supports heart health and circulation. Saponin A is also known to carry anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, and immune support properties.
